How to Apply for the HISA Grant

Applying for the HISA grant might seem complicated, but New Bath Today is here to make the process easy. Our team understands VA requirements and will guide you every step of the way to help ensure a smooth application.

1. Talk to Your VA Doctor
Let your VA doctor know you’re interested in the HISA grant. They’ll set up a consultation to assess your needs and determine if a walk-in shower or other modification is medically necessary.
A VA representative will either visit your home or schedule a video call to evaluate your space and recommend modifications. After this, you’ll receive an application packet.
We’ll assist you in filling out the paperwork and provide all necessary documentation, including cost sheets and photos of your existing bathroom. Since we’ve helped many veterans with this process, we know exactly what the VA looks for in an application.
Once submitted, the VA will review your application, which typically takes 30-45 days. If approved, you’ll receive an official approval letter.
After approval, we’ll schedule your bathroom upgrade and ensure everything is ready for a seamless installation.
Once the work is complete, we’ll provide a final receipt and “after” photos for you to submit to the VA. Veterans can receive up to $6,800 in reimbursement.
The VA will not reimburse any modifications started before official approval, so be sure to wait for the green light before beginning any work.

What is the HISA Grant?

Frequently Asked Questions

The sooner you get in touch with your VA rep, the better! All VA offices operate a bit differently, so getting the answers directly from your local VA office is best.
Unfortunately, No. Part of the VA’s process specifies that you may not be reimbursed if any work occurs prior to final approval.

The VA will reimburse you after the installation, so you can’t use the funds as a down payment. You’ll need to pay for the full cost of the shower or arrange financing. Helpful Fact: New Bath Home offers financing through a third party and can help you arrange it if needed. After that, we’ll provide you with the final receipt and photos to submit to the VA for reimbursement.

The max amount that the VA will reimburse is $6,800 (sometimes in two separate payments of $3,400). In some cases, you could qualify for less if your disability rating is lower than 100%.
The paperwork requires a lot of personal information (SSN, bank information, etc.), so we’re unable to fill out the paperwork, but we’re here to answer questions and walk you through the process. We’ll also provide you with cost sheet and before photos, both of which are required to be submitted alongside the paperwork. Upon completion, we’ll also send you a final itemized receipt along with after photos, all catered to the VA’s preferred submission style.
Since the HISA grant covers up to $6,800, you’ll have to pay any costs beyond that amount yourself, as the VA won’t reimburse those.
The timeline can differ between VA offices, but it typically takes about 30-45 days to get final approval. You’ll know you’ve been approved once you receive an official approval letter in the mail. Sometimes, your VA representative may let you know before the letter arrives. As soon as you’re approved, please contact your VA/Grant Specialist so we can schedule your installation.
